“….darkness was upon thee face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2
Dear Ones:
One of the recurring tendencies in the thinking of men is that persistent comparing of oneself with another. With respect to creation, and the vastness of the universe, this is ever so clear, in that we elevate our “great” thinkers, scientists, and explorers to levels of worth, putting them almost in the place of God. However, when we back off and look at the situation at a distance, and we group all of the savants in a group, since the beginning of time, they only appear as Isaiah spoke of the nations, “dust on the scales,” and a “drop in a bucket.” It is good and right to give honor to whom honor is due, and for these men of great learning, wisdom, and knowledge, we congratulate them, and are thankful for them. However, when we look behind them, to the vastness of eternity, realizing that the Eternal God has called into being the very elements of creation, and creation itself, then we must ask the question: “What honor is due Him?”
In the first verse of the Bible, we discover that God was BEFORE creation, before all the wisdom and knowledge of men, however so “great.” We see also that in the revelation of His presence, there is a design, purpose, and power, in His heart and mind that exceeds the capacity of man to comprehend and grasp. That which is so amazing about God, as we see Him in the creation of the world, is that He SPEAKS, and His purposes are accomplished and realized. We find also that in speaking, He speaks to “nothing,” to the emptiness and void, there to create, and bring out of nothing, something. The author of the book of Hebrews put it like this: “…the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” (Heb. 11:3) Another example of this matter of speaking to that which does not exist, and seeing the realization of it, was when the Lord Jesus came to the tomb of Lazarus, who had been dead for four days. It will be by Jesus’ “Life-giving” words, “Lazarus, come forth,” that LIFE is put into a body that has died. Lazarus is revived and brought back to life. Here is the creative “word” of God speaking to the emptiness of a spent life, a life-less body in the tomb, there to bring forth life by the demonstration of Christ’s Life-giving power. That power was the same as was revealed when the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, bringing forth the creation by the Word of God, by Christ, to the glory of the Father. This was also the same power that was entrusted to the disciples on the day of Pentecost, when “Life” in its power was demonstrated and revealed to “the chosen few,” praying together in Jerusalem, waiting for the promise of the Father. This is that same power that speaks life into the lost soul, in accordance with the glorious Gospel. Every time a person comes to Christ, and is born again of the Spirit, Christ has spoken Life into the dead.
The basic principle by which Creation came about, and by which a person becomes a new creation in Christ, is God speaking. By His words, through the living objective word, empowered by the Spirit, He draws out the heart of the individual to Him. He creates an interest, a thirst, a conviction, but also, provides a WAY, the knowledge of His way, by which a person can with full assurance KNOW Him. He truly speaks LIFE into the dead, awakens us from our sleep, and strengthens us to believe Him for His fullness. To the man who was crippled for thirty-eight years, by the pool Bethesda, with no hope of every walking, Jesus would say: “Rise, take up thy bed and walk.” (John 5:8) All that was needed was the authoritative word from Christ.
Dear Father, Open our eyes to see Thy power in Thy word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love, Dad
