“Who hath…weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?” Isaiah 40:12
Dear Ones:
What is there beyond one of our lives? What is there beyond “self?” Scripture tells us that “…the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance.” (Is. 40:15) What a comparison!!! To God, not only does He weigh the mountains and hills on scales, but to Him the nations are but a “drop of a bucket,” and counted as “small dust” upon the eternal scales. If “…all flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field,” (Is. 40:6), then “…what is man that Thou art mindful of him? And the son of man that Thou visitest him?” (Ps. 8:4) How small are the nations to God! How much more the insignificance, and littleness of man! This reality begs the question: What is there beyond “self,” and the nations?
David and Moses were “great” men, not by virtue of the fact that they were held in high esteem in the eyes of men, but because God gave them a knowledge of Himself that was extraordinary and exceptional. The marvelous thing in consideration of this knowledge is that God gave it to them FOR US!! In Psalm 27, David was so enraptured by the “sight,” or perception of the person and nature of God, that he would write: “…One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, TO BEHOLD THE BEAUTY OF THE LORD, and to inquire in His temple.” (v.4) Moses, having perceived the same reality of God would write in Psalm 90:17, “…and let THE BEAUTY OF THE LORD OUR GOD be upon us…” Two meek men, declaring the same reality: that which is beyond them is so much greater, and more lovely than ALL of creation.
Another Psalmist would write: “Whom have I in heaven but Thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside Thee?” (73:25) How could the Psalmist write such a word concerning the things of earth in comparison with God? The Apostle Paul would speak of the same comparison: “…If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are ABOVE, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Col. 3:1,2) Why does he speak thus? For the same reason that Moses and David spoke of the inexpressible beauty of God in His holiness. There is NO comparison with Him in His glory, and the things of earth.
Dear Father, enlarge our vision of Thyself, Thy Son, and the Spirit. Open our eyes to see Thy beauty, and the inexpressible blessedness of beginning to know Thee. Grant that Thy Son’s work by the Spirit will have its ever- increasing perfect work in us this day. Fill us with Thy Spirit, that we may go forth this day “in the business of our Father,” animated with Thy zeal, living to do Thy will, for Thy glory. Accomplish in us, through us, all Thy will this day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love, Dad
