Dear Ones:
In A.L. Waring‘s great hymn, “In Heavenly Love Abiding,” she writes:
“In heavenly love abiding,
NO CHANGE my heart shall fear;
For safe is such confiding,
For nothing changes here.”
It is a great day when we come to grips with the changeless Christ in the midst of ever changing circumstances. It is a wonderful day, for we begin to see the reason for which the Lord Jesus said “Take therefore no thought (be not anxious) for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.” (Matt.6:34) The Lord prefaces this statement by instructing us, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.” (v.33) This is of paramount and eternal importance. We are called to live a life “above,” though our feet are on this earth. We are called upon to become like the Lord Jesus Himself, who lived a changeless life in purpose and principle, who lived, rested, and reveled in the changeless love of His Father.
Horatius Bonar wrote in his hymn “I Hear The Words Of Love“:
“I change, He changes not,
The Christ can never die;
His love, not mine, the resting place,
His truth, not mine, the tie.”
There is but one Person who never changes, in whom we can assuredly place all of our trust, and this is Christ.
Jean S. Pigott wrote in the hymn “Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting“:
“Jesus, I am resting, resting,
In the joy of what Thou art.
I am finding out the greatness,
Of thy loving heart.”
Listen: “Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting” (Steve Green)
Scripture as well as these hymns speak to us concerning this Changeless Person, Jesus Christ. They declare specifically that His love towards us never changes. Circumstances, feelings, thoughts, sickness or health, plenty or loss, all that we know during our time on this earth, is marked by change but God is sovereign in them all and He never changes. Best of all, God, in Christ, reveals His love for us.
Paul declares in Romans 8:38,39, “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Nothing and no one can separate us from God’s love. Indeed as Bonar wrote, “His love, NOT MINE, the resting place; His truth, NOT MINE, the tie.”
So today, let us by faith take our stand on the rock of this unchanging love. Let us appropriate it by faith believing that what God has said is true because “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) Let us choose to live in the light of His changeless life and love, believing Him fearlessly. May we say with great joy, the words of Anna Letitia Waring in “In Heavenly Love Abiding,”:
“In heavenly love abiding,
no change my heart shall fear;
and safe is such confiding,
for NOTHING changes here…”
Love,
Dad
