“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26
The day is upon us where there is no other choice than to believe the Lord Jesus’s words, and live by them. Christ, by the Spirit of God, IS our present Teacher. All through the Psalms we find this reoccuring truth, that first of all, the believer has daily need to be taught by God concerning the truths and issues of the Kingdom, and secondly, that God WILL teach the one who is willing to be taught. This means that one is not only desirous to be taught, but is looking to the Lord Jesus to teach him. He is living in the expectation of the realized necessity of being taught by God, and that, “today.” “Today, if you hear His voice,” is the great admonition to the one who is truly listening. The great confirmation of God being willing to teach in answer to faith, according to HIs declared word is this: “I WILL instruct you and teach you in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with Mine eye.” (Ps. 32:8)
In John’s first letter, he writes concerning being taught: “But the anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him.” (1 Jn. 2:27) What is John saying here? First and foremost he addresses a present spiritual reality that the believer must grasp. It is that, when he came through to Christ, being baptized into Him, he received the anointing of the Spirit of God. What does this mean? God not only made the believer a new creature in Christ, but anointed him with the same Holy Spirit with which Christ was anointed. Born of the Spirit, he is called to live BY the Spirit, this anointing which not only distinguishing the believer from those who do not believe, but is the active communicator of Christ’s Life to, and through the believer. One aspect of that revelation of Christ’s life in the heart is the revelation of the Spirit’s role. He IS our teacher, now and forever. How much can teach? Christ, by the Spirit, is willing to teach us as much as we can learn. So there is the issue of capacity, not only determined by our calling, but by our willingness and desire to be taught. Secondly, Christ is willing to teach us, “…exceeding abundantly above all that we can ask or think.” (Eph. 3:20) The Spirit of God has been given to us that we might “know” the things that are freely given to us of God. (1 Cor. 2:12) The Lord is willing to take us deeper in our knowledge of Him, and this in every dimension of His love, that in having a vision of Him, His ways, and the knowledge of His will, we should be transformed from within by the Spirit to the praise of His glory.
How great is our need to be taught of the Spirit? And how much should we see the Lord Jesus to be taught? We get a glimpse of this when we look at the Lord Jesus in the gospels. Here He is the Son of God, having come as the Savior of the World. What does He begin to do? His ministry is primarily one of teaching and preaching the truths of the kingdom, so that by them, faith can be exercised to receive the blessing. This is one reason for which the Apostle Paul wrote, “…according to the power that worketh in us.” (Eph. 3:20) If faith is to receive the power of God, then the believer must be taught of God to believe God according to the truth. It is imperative that we be teachable, and taught by the Spirit today.
Dear Father, Teach us fully today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
