“…and he (Moses) led the flock to the backside of the desert.” Exodus 3:1
Dear Ones:
Can you MAKE God speak to you? It is a ridiculous question. How can One so great and glorious, holy and perfect in all of His Person, stoop to the dictates of sinful man? There is no doubt that God speaks to us every day. He is so desirous and willing to speak to us. But He will do so on His terms, and in His way.
The story of Moses, his birth, calling, and work, is a flagrant contradiction to the culture of man. His story begins with him as a helpless baby, unknowingly faced with the edict of a ruler who desires his death. He is miraculously spared, and even raised in the court of Pharoah. He is later forced to flee into the solitude and refuge of the wilderness, where again his life is spared. There he will live for many long years, becoming a shepherd of sheep. We do not know if God spoke to him during this time, or what He might have said. We only know that Moses was not ready to hear the voice of God, with regard to his calling. The great “natural” potential of the man had to be brought into the proper perspective. With all of his great “capacities,” they would be useless in economy of God. The God who had made him, spared him, and brought him to that lonely desert, knew his heart. It would be THEN, when he was ready, that God would choose to speak to him.
Why is Christ the contradiction of our culture? The answer to this question began in the Garden of Eden, when the pride of man began to embrace a lie, and false system of value and worth. Instead of Christ being the very center and essence of the existence and purpose of man, MAN became the central point of reference, of value and meaning. Man’s “worth” as opposed to that of God, became his obsession. Man’s imaginations, speculations, and arrogant thoughts towards God led him to put an inordinate value upon “things” and “people” rather than Christ, our creator. Moses had to be delivered from many of these false ideas and concepts in order to hear the voice of God, and to respond to it. God brings the “glory of man” down into the dust, in order to lift us up to hear those wonderful words: “Come, follow Me.” Moses would hear the voice of God when the worth of God was more important than the worth of the things, and cultures of this world.
Dear Father, give us grace to understand that you do not choose many wise men after the flesh, nor many mighty, nor many noble. Open our eyes to see, to know that our helplessness is the great condition to knowing Thy blessing. Speak to our hearts, enabling us to hear Thy voice saying, “This is the way; walk ye in it.” We thank Thee, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love, Dad
