“My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning. Yes, more than those who watch for the morning.” Psalm 131:6
Throughout history, those who have truly sought the Lord have found Him. For some, He was found as that “very present help in trouble.” For others He was found as a fountain, even a river of living water which not only quenched one’s thirst, but put life and strength into the heart to overcome adversity. Then there were those who sought and found the Lord because they sought HIM, to worship and adore Him, their Maker, Redeemer, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God and Prince of Peace. The main point in the consideration of this matter of seeking the Lord is the fact and certainty of finding Him.
In the Psalms, these blessed songs of praise and worship, are also testimonies of different individual’s pursuit of God, and the experiences in which He was sought and found. We find here revealed that it is the working of the Spirit of God Who is creating a thirst for Christ and for those things which are above. The Spirit of God gives to the soul, not only a yearning for things above which are not of this world, because of sin, and its effects, but because of the ONE who stands alone as the worthy object of worship and blessing. The God who revealed Himself as perfectly, and perpetually GOOD in creation, has surpassed all human capacity to fully grasp His goodness and mercy in the sending of His Son to save us all. Can little, sinful man then know God? God is able to meet any person, however for the most part, humanity is not willing to come and bow down before the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Humanity to a great extent is not willing to fall at the pierced feet of Christ, appealing to His infinite mercy to save and transform. They will not come because of the distractions of earth, and the littleness of conviction of their eternal need. They will not come also because perhaps there has not been a preacher sent to them, or a witness to the life and power of Christ to save, thus awakening desire for God. But what about finding Him with certainty, receiving the assurance that one has been truly found BY Him? Is this possible?
When Habakkuk the prophet was overwhelmed by what the Lord showed him with respect to what was coming upon the land of Israel because of their rebellion against God, Scripture tells us that he “set himself on the rampart,” and watched to SEE what He (God) would say to him, but also, what Habakkuk would answer to that which God revealed. (Hab. 2:1) In other words, Habakkuk, because of the circumstances at hand, knew that he HAD to meet God, be met BY God, and that he would need to be ready to answer, and respond to God’s words rightly.
Hundreds of years before Habakkuk, a psalmist penned the words expressing the same experience: “My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning.” (Ps. 130:6) Here is a man of like desire as Habakkuk, and who will be met God in His faithfulness in like manner. David would write: “O God, your are my God; early will I seek You.” (Ps. 63:1) These were men of different times and circumstances who thirsted after God, sought Him, and found Him. Indeed, the Lord Jesus said: “Everyone who asks, receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” (Matt.7:8) And what of today, and now?
The present moment is the greatest and most opportune time to meet God, for in this present moment, the destiny of our souls, and purpose of our lives is daily determined. This is why throughout Scripture we find this phrase: “From this time forth and forever.” Why is this moment, this day, this “time” so important? It is because man CAN know God, in Christ, by the Spirit of God.
Dear Father, Grant us Your desires. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
