“Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from Him cometh my salvation. He only is my rock, and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.” Psalm 62:1-2
The bedrock and foundation of the whole of Christianity is Christ. The absolute fundamental principle by which one can know the reality of Christ being one’s “Rock,” “Fortress,” and “Salvation,” is faith, wholehearted personal trust in Him. There is no other way to please God than to first trust Him, for “…he that cometh to God MUST believe that He IS and that He is the rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” (Heb. 11:6) Jesus never turned away the seeking soul, never denied His saving power to the one who knew he was lost, hopeless, and helpless, in the face of eternity, and one’s present life. The question is never whether God, in Christ, by the Spirit will respond to the seeking heart, for the word of God, both in the Old and New Testaments is very clear on the subject. Jeremiah wrote: “And ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for me with ALL your heart. And I will be found of you, saith the Lord; and I will turn away your captivity.” (Jer. 29:13-14) In the New Testament, the Lord declared in the context of prayer: “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” (Matt. 7:7) To enforce, and to drive home the truth of what He is saying , the Lord continues: “For EVERYONE that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” (v.8) What is the purpose of the Lord in speaking in this manner? It is to call out the heart of the individual to true faith, a whole-hearted, unrerserved trust in God, as one comes to God in prayer. Later on with regard to this subject, the Lord encourages one to believe in the Father, by giving a glimpse into the Father’s heart: “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto you children, HOW MUCH MORE shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask Him?” (v.11) What is this glimpse into the heart of God? It is one where the discovery is made that the Almighty God, so infinitely greater and more powerful than we could ever be or imagine, is intimately acquainted with our deepest heart need. The sincere soul is that one who prays to God for His best and Highest, so that His great glory with thanksgiving will be revealed to all creation, both seen and unseen. God the Father, from heaven, is not only able, but so very willing, to give that which is good to the one who comes to Him with a sincere heart, one of faith and trust. He waits to be gracious, and to show Himself strong in the behalf of the one who truly, sincerely seeks Him. In essence, He waits to be wanted. He will be found by the one who seeks Him truly.
To return to our subject of God leading us to “the rock that is higher than I,” to know the reality of Christ being our rock, strength, and salvation, the Psalmist reveals that it is God that orchestrates circumstances, and works in the heart, to draw out the soul to seek God. He does so in the unanticipated circumstances of life, those moments when one realizes ones own need, and incapacity to face and overcome that which opposes faith. It is then, in answer to the cry of the heart, that God comes to reveal Himself, first to the heart and then in the circumstances. He never fails to hear the cry of the heart, and respond to the thirsting of the soul. That which is His purpose is to bring the believer to SEE, understand, and appropriate Christ as the sole, entire answer to his heart’s need. In receiving all by faith in Christ, God is truly known.
Dear Father, Lead us to Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
