Dear Ones:
I will try and give a definition of the sovereignty of God.
God, The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, existing before all of creation or the beginning of time, is all powerful, all knowing, always purposeful, and always working all things towards His designed objective: the revelation of His glory, and our blessing. Within these parameters, He is almighty, all wise, and all loving, to do as He wills, in His time and in His way. It is by His mercy, and through the provision of His grace, that He has brought our existence into His sovereign plan and will. Because of His great love He works all things after the counsel of that purpose and will.
Our difficulty in understanding the sovereignty of God stems from two things in particular: our littleness and our sinfulness. Let us look to His Word and ask Him to anoint our eyes to see His purpose and His character.
In the beginning, God made all things good. (Genesis 1:31) God IS good. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth His handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night knowledge.” (Psalms 19:1,2) “For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead.” (Romans 1:20)
The point is that from the creation until this present moment, in the sovereign plan and will of God, the whole of creation declares night and day that God is God, and that He is good.
Sin entered into the world when Adam fell and with sin came all of the suffering and death that we see. God made provision for us. John declares, “For God so love the WORLD that He gave His only begotten Son…” (John 3:16) The writer of Hebrews said, “In these last days, He (God) has spoken unto us by His Son…” (Hebrews 1:2) He also wrote, “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for every man.”
What is God’s will for us? “God our Savior…desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (I Timothy 2:3,4) The point is this. When we consider the sovereignty of God, we must understand that God has done, is doing all, …every imaginable thing, every essential thing…every costly thing…to declare to man that He is God, and that He will save, and meet every need in the heart and soul of man, for His glory, and for man’s eternal good.
How can we doubt the love of this Sovereign God who did not spare His Son? Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.” (John 15:13,14)
“For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:6-8)
Can we trust in the heart of God if we cannot trace His hand? “And we KNOW that ALL things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28) We are called to trust Him wholly even when we do not understand the situations of our lives. He is faithful. He will not fail us nor forsake us. After all He is God.
Let us say as Solomon did, “My Beloved is mine, and I am His.” (Song of Solomon 2:16)
Love,
Dad
