“And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2
Dear Ones:
We have a tendency to disassociate the teaching on the Spirit of God in creation from that of the “outpouring” on the day of Pentecost in the New Testament. In one sense, we do this to our peril, for it is essential that we have a true, and great vision of the Spirit of God. If we look at Him in the first verses of the book of Genesis, we see that He is integral in creation. He brought order out of chaos, and brought the different elements of creation into existence. We know, from the teaching of John and Paul, that Christ is the Alpha and Omega, the Creator. But we must never forget that the Spirit, with Christ and the Father, are one. When we read what Isaiah declared of God, “…and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, MIGHTY GOD, Ever-lasting Father,” (9:6), we are brought face to face with the fact that the Spirit of God in the Trinity, is ALMIGHTY GOD. It is imperative to our faith, that we realize that “…He that is in us is GREATER than he that is in the world.” Our vision of the magnitude, power, and nature of the Spirit of God, is essential if we would trust Him to be what He desires to be to us, and to do through us.
From the very beginning of Jesus’ ministry, we find John the Baptist telling us, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode on Him (Jesus).” (John 1:32) He would go on to say that Jesus was the one, “…which baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” (v.33) Keep in mind that this Spirit of God of whom John speaks, is the Spirit of Creation!!! When Jesus was dealing with Nicodemus, He said: “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (3:5) Here again, we have the Spirit of Creation who is intricately, and perceptibly involved in bringing souls into the kingdom of God. Lastly, we see the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy in the book of Acts, on the day of Pentecost. What occurred there? In essence, it was the coming of the Spirit of God, not only to dwell WITH believers, but to dwell IN them. The Spirit of Creation has thus been declared to be the Spirit of Redemption, and the Spirit of Sanctification.
What does this mean for us? What effect should it have in our lives? First, and foremost, it is by the Spirit of God that we LIVE. He is the giver of ETERNAL LIFE. (Romans 8:2) Secondly, He is not only our only deterrent to sin, self, Satan, and the world, He is also that overcoming STRENGTH to rise up and reign in life. Thirdly, He is that one that leads us, and witnesses to our spirits that we are children of God.(v.14,16) Lastly, since He is that one of overwhelming power, strength, and authority, He is that one who will confirm us to the end, enabling us to overcome all for the glory of Christ.
Dear Father, give us a true and great vision of the Spirit of God, and His ministry. Enable us to trust Him fully, believing in His power and strength, as we look unto Jesus, worshiping and adoring Him. Then You will be revealed in our hearts, and the world will “taste and see that the Lord is good.” We thank Thee in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love, Dad
The question of wether to worship the Spirit or pray to the Spirit has come up in discussion with other believers recently. This answers that question clearly!
