“So shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11
If ever there was a picture of the power and authority of the word of God, it is found in the book of Revelation, when we see the “King of Kings, and Lord of Lords,” returning to “judge and make war.” (19:11) The picture of the glorified and conquering Christ is that of Him riding on a white horse, with the host of heaven behind him on white horses. This is that one whom John in his gospel calls, “The Word of God.” (1:1) We see this One who is called Faithful and True, clothed in fine linen, “white and clean.” (19:14) And then we see, “…out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations.” (v.15) Why is it that we see this sword coming out of His mouth? It is the symbol and very declaration of His absolute authority and power to accomplish all that is in His heart to do, and see His will done. In other words, in this spiritual warfare with Satan, it is His WORD, the very expression and extension of His person, that is used to bring about the defeat of every enemy.
The knowledge of the power and authority of Christ’s words, or the word of God, gives to the believer a clear understanding of God’s way of faith, based, and in accordance with His word, the absolute truth. The individual who would believe God, submit to His authority, and follow Christ wholeheartedly, is that one who believes in the faithfulness of God to accomplish ALL that He declares. The believer may not understand fully the ways of God, and certainly His working, but He can be fully assured of this: when God speaks, it is truth and He will do exactly as He has promised. When His word goes forth out of His mouth, as He declares: “…it shall NOT return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
In the book of Habakkuk, we find that God instructs Habakkuk to write down a vision that He will give him, destined to be learned by the people, and read even by us today. The vision consisted in God declaring what He would do, and that which He would bring about. He told Habakkuk to write down the vision, and make it plain to read, and understand. This was done, not only that the people would respond to His word, and “run,” but that the world would see and know that He is the Almighty God, who alone possesses the absolute authority and power to bring about His perfect purpose, will, in His way. With regard to timing, He declared: “The vision yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” (2:3) Time is not a factor with God, with regard to accomplishing His will. However, faith is a factor for the believer in responding to the knowledge of the will of God according to all that He said He would do.
When the Apostle Paul wrote his second letter to the Corinthians, he spoke of the believer’s ministry or reconciliation, that of bringing men and women to Christ, and being reconciled with God. He spoke of believers being ambassadors for Christ, beseeching others to be reconciled to God. How does this occur? It is by the word of God, that authoritative and powerful Gospel, which God will use to save and sanctify. Not only is the believer called to be actively engaged in this ministry, by prayer, according to one’s gifts, and specific calling, but working together WITH God by the Spirit. God calls, works and speaks through His servants to manifest His victory.
Dear Father, Speak to and through us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
