“So shall my word be that goeth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11
As was the manner and means of God, when He created the world, so it is today in His dealings with men, peoples, and nations. That which makes His word, and the moving of the Spirit, such monumental considerations for us, is the principle, and reality, of Him working, by speaking life-giving, and event changing, words. He speaks, and by design, it is done. For example, the Lord says concerning the calling of each believer: “Faithful is He that calls you, who also will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24) He also said through the writings of the Apostle Paul: “For the gifts and the calling of God are without repentance.” (Romans 11:29) We might ask the question concerning these thoughts, and truths: “How does His word affect the individual who grasps the fact that there is not only the intent of God behind the words, hence, the calling, but the very same power and authority that He exerted by the Spirit at creation? It is true that such an application of these truths is extremely small concerning the individual, when compared with creation, but the principle is the same. God is faithful, and He will do what He has said, and accomplish that which he has declared. This is because He alone is the Almighty God, perfect, and supreme in power and authority, committed to honoring His word. His spoken word is the expression and extension of Himself. This is why there were the patriarchs to whom He spoke, and the prophets who communicated His word to men. By HIs words, He revealed Himself to the believer. How do these truths apply to us today?
To grasp something of the importance of Christ’s words to His believers today, we must have a clear vision of who He is. It is the vision of Christ which raises faith to the heights of being able to truly appropriate Him, believe Him for the great and small thing, standing firm, even thought assailed by the storms of circumstance, or resisted by Satan. Concerning the Son of God, Isaiah writes: “…the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God…” (Is. 9:6) In John’s vision of God upon His throne in Revelation, chapter four, we read: “…and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.” (v.8) This is a constant theme of heaven expressing the greatness of God by His holy nature, but also, by His everlasting, and unchanging power. He is ALL-MIGHTY. None is greater than Him. None can alter what He has said, nor change or stop His working according to will. When the Lamb of God, the victorious Lion of the tribe of Juda, before the throne of heaven, after receiving the book from the Father, there was a massive proclamation: “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory and blessing.” (5:12) In this phrase, we get a glimpse of that which Christ was, received, and to whom was given, the blessings of the Father, because of His worthiness, His sacrifice, and finished work. Hence, how important, powerful, and far reaching are His words? True faith is that confidence and certainty in God the Father, and the Son, by the Spirit, that takes its stand upon the truth, the words of Christ, certain that He will work faithfully according to them, accomplishing all that the Father intended.
As believers today, we are called, as the disciples of old, to first, “hear Him.” How shall we hear if we do not approach the word of God with an attitude of teachable receptivity? And how shall we be sure of what He is saying, if we are not willing to do His will? (Jn. 7:17) God’s word is God’s way to know Him, Christ revealing Himself to the heart.
Dear Father, Show us Thyself, hearing and believing Thy words. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
