“‘And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and My people shall be satisfied with My goodness,’ saith the Lord.” Jeremiah 31:14
The greatest pursuit that a man can have is that of pursuing God, to know Him. Why? Primarily, it is because of the word that reveals that He is “holy.” He is unique, infinite, wonderful, good, perfect in all His ways. There is love, true joy and peace, in Him. There is strength and power, of a magnitude and nature, that those who believe in Him, can know His victory over all the power of the enemy, even death itself. Throughout Scripture this Holy God has distinguished Himself by truths that are fathomless in meaning, and beauty. Though all around us seems to be unjust at times, and the sins of men, which seem to dominate this earth, there shines a Light of Life, a Hope of the world, in a singular revelation of the love of God, that is so distinct, clear, powerful, and life-changing, that one stands in awe of even the possibility of knowing something of God, much less knowing Him, walking with and communing with Him. Amid the rubble of empires fallen, there has arisen a beacon of wonder, of grace and goodness. It is the Lord Jesus, lifted up upon a Cross, dying for the sins of all men, and raised from the dead by the power of the Spirit, that this one singular hope of the world has unlocked an eternal door, through a rent veil, that men might know Him. Men who were dead in their sins, prisoners to the god of this world, Satan, can now know, by the finished work of Christ on the Cross, and the Pentecostal power of the Spirit of God, the goodness and love of God, who is Holy, unique, and perfectly good in all of His being and actions. This God, who cannot deny what He is, regardless of the opinions of men, has come in Christ to reveal to lost men, that He has come not only to save us them, but to introduce them into a life to be lived in the Light of His countenance, and favor. This Life which all men are called to know and to live, “on earth as it is in heaven,” is an all-encompassing one, one that fills to the full, to overflowing. It is one where Christ is ALL to the glory of the Father, one where all thoughts are brought to the obedience of Christ, so that, through the believing the truth of God, the Life of Jesus should be received and revealed in the life of every member of the body of Christ. In what measure is this “knowledge of God” to be experienced?
In the book of Jeremiah, the Lord speaking of what He will do in bringing the people out of captivity, and back to the land of promise, Jeremiah writes: “Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the Lord.” (31:12) He goes on to speak of the souls of the priests which will be “satiated,” a word meaning “filled to the full.” David spoke of this same concept in Psalm 23: “…My cup runneth over.” With regard to His people, He declares: “…My people shall be satisfied with My goodness.” (31:14) Why does the Lord give to the people of Israel through the prophet Jeremiah, such a declaration of His wondrous acts that he will do? He does so in order to give them a vision, which will create hope. This hope is so very important because of the suffering the people have so long endured. God gives them a wonderful hope. But then, at the same time, He then calls them to faith, a faith that is fixed wholly in Him, according to His specific word. Jeremiah continues to write the Lord’s words to Israel, speaking of the realization of that blessing: “For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.” (v.25)
Dear Father, Give to us grace to trust Thee for Thy fulness, and the satisfaction of heart, which Thou alone canst give. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
