“…for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6
Dear Ones:
Why can we say that faith is logical, the right thing to practice and embrace, when it comes to the things of God? First, we have to look at what the Bible tells us of God. We see from the very first pages that He is presented to us as Previous to all creation, and the very Maker and Sustainer of Creation. (Genesis 1) John tells us in his gospel: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.” (Jn. 1:1) Of course, the apostle is speaking of the eternal Christ here. But note that He was previous to the “beginning.” From the very beginning of the revelation of God in the Scriptures, God lays a foundation for our faith. It begins with His pre-existence to all of creation as we know it.
The second thing we need to see with respect to God is that which is revealed IN His creation, which tells us the truth of His character and capacity. Scripture tells us that all that He did in creating the world, and the universe, was intrinsically “good.” Now this word “good” has to be qualified for us, so that we understand that it is good from God’s holy and perfect standpoint. There was NO flaw or decay in that creation. It was the expression of Him, His beauty, wisdom and power. On this side of Eden, after the Fall of Adam and Eve, we “see as through a glass darkly” the glory of the Lord, as opposed to what was revealed in the Garden. Even so, in a sinful world, we refer to what the seraphims were crying out in the revelation of God to Isaiah, “…Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts: THE WHOLE EARTH IS FULL OF HIS GLORY.” (Is. 6:9) Even in Isaiah’s day, though sin and injustice was rampant, yet the whole earth declared day and night the glory of God, preaching the invisible attributes of God. So, where is the logic of faith here? It resides in this, that God has given us a knowledge of the truth concerning His nature and purpose, but there is NO way that we can understand it fully. Our capacity to grasp, understand, assimilate the greatness, power, and holiness of God, is impossible. If we would believe, then we are called upon to do so with regard to the truths that we see of Him in creation.
There is another facet of this logic of faith that is necessary to grasp. It has to do with the ultimate revelation of God in Christ. How could we ever grasp, understand, and embrace the reality that an eternal, and holy God, would have anything to do with sinful man, who in his heart is a natural enemy of God? There is no greater testimony, no greater declaration of the nature of God, and His intent with regard to man, than the giving of His Son to die for an entire world, to pay the wages of their sin, and the debt that all men owe Him. Christ tasted death for EVERY man, for the wages of his sin is just that, death.
But above all aspects of logic is the truth concerning the motive of God in dealing with us. There exists the declared fact, and proof, of His love for us. He demonstrated, and proclaimed, His love for us, not only for the world, but for every individual in the world. It was for love of the sinner that God gave that which was most precious, pleasing, to Him. The ONLY logical response to the revelation of the attributes of the character and nature of God, especially the love of God, is faith, a committal of all that we are and have to Him for time and eternity.
Dear Father, open our eyes to see that Your way is that of faith, a receiving of all that you declare, even though we may not fully understand. Give us to see that you respond to the heart that truly cries out to You. We thank and praise Thee, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love, Dad
