“I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walks in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts.” Isaiah 65:2
Dear Ones:
In Psalm 19, David tells us that “…the heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament (the physical creation pertaining to earth in particular) shows His handiwork.” This is great news indeed, but then he adds, “…DAY UNTO DAY utters speech, and night unto night shows knowledge.” (v.1,2) What is he saying, or trying to communicate to us? It is that God is speaking to mankind every day and night, without ceasing, revealing to him His invisible attributes, that we might worship Him in truth. If this is not clear enough, the Psalmist goes on to say that God is doing this wherever there is speech or language…through all the earth, …to the end of the world.”
There is another way that the Lord is speaking to mankind, and it is through the “law of the Lord,” which is perfect. This is the objective, written revelation of the truth of God’s heart, character, nature and ways. So potentially powerful is this “revelation” that it “…converts the soul,” or “restores the soul.” In speaking of God’s statutes and judgments, the psalmist speaks of their worth, “…more to be desired than gold,” “sweeter also than honey, and the honeycomb.” (v.10)
Again, how frequently does God speak to us in creation and through His word? Isaiah tells us that He spreads out His hands “…all the day.” It is inconceivable that the God who would love the world so very much to give His son to die for it, does not desire and will to speak to us, communicate with us, commune with us…and this on a daily, even moment by moment, basis. The writer of Hebrews uses this phrase: “TODAY, if you will hear His voice…” (3:7) Paul will use a similar wording to convey the same matter, “…NOW is the accepted time; behold, now is the DAY of salvation.” (2 Cor. 6:2) The eternal God is the God of TODAY…the God of the NOW. Note that all through the Psalms, David and other writers, use the present tense to speak of what God IS to them.
This line of thought brings us to the matter of “daily bread.” Do we trust the God of the present moment, the God of TODAY, who ever holds out his arms and hands to us, to reveal Himself to us through the living word, every day, morning? Do we trust Him to open our eyes to see His glory in creation? It is one thing to read the Bible, and to look upon the beauty of creation. It is quite another to trust God by the Spirit, whose will it is to speak to us today individually, to do so “in accents clear and still.” Remember what Jesus told Martha, “Did I not say unto you, that if you would believe, you would SEE the glory of God?” (Jn. 11:40)
Dear Father, give us grace to see something of the lengths that You have gone to, to persuade us that You desire and will to speak clearly, convincingly to us today, every day. Give us grace to not be distracted by the things of this life, and this world, that we neglect in the least, the “gold” and “honey” of Thy word. O “speak and make us listen, Thou Guardian of our souls.” Then we shall walk with Thee today, in fellowship with Thee, in faith, in love, believing Thee to accomplish through us all that You desire for Your glory. We thank and praise Thee, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love, Dad
