Dear Ones:
In G. Campbell’s book on Jesus’ dealings with individuals (The Great Physician), he brings out that even at Jesus’ meeting with Pilate before the crucifixion, He was seeking him, seeking to stir something up in him so that Pilate would seek God. This Jesus did when He said to Pilate: “…I came into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.” (Jn. 18:37) The reaction of Pilate is like that of many in this world: “What is truth?” (v. 38) And yet in that question, and its true answer, lies the whole reason for man’s existence and purpose. Jesus Christ came into this world not only to declare the absolute truth, but to exemplify it…to manifest it. In declaring, “I am the truth…” (Jn. 14:6), He lays the only foundation for understanding our “raison d’etre” (reason to be…), and reveals to us the only means by which this can be truly realized. Declared to be our “Rock” in the Old Testament, and our “Foundation” in the New, He is the same today…and there is no other place of certainty, of surety, upon which we can place our whole weight and trust fully.
In Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians, he writes that part of the armor of God, which we are to TAKE, is the “sword of the Spirit, which IS the word of God.” (Eph. 6:17) Now why is this so? For one thing, the “word of God” is the absolute truth. And secondly, that “word of God” is “…living (and thus, life-giving), and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword.” (Heb. 4:12) The Spirit of God is that One who gives forth that Word according to the dictates of the Father and the Son, and this, in perfect congruity with the whole of the Trinity. The whole Person of God is behind, and IN that word of God. The Spirit of God makes the objective Word to be living, powerful, “life-giving.” There is POWER in that Word of God, power to make the dead live. As Wesley puts it: “Power into strengthless souls He speaks, and life into the dead.”
So today, let us grasp the TRUTH above all speculation, imagination, and philosophies of men. The objective truth has endured since the beginning of time, only to be revealed to us in Jesus Christ. The Spirit of truth is in our hearts, and the Word of God is before us in Scripture. Let us believe Him for the living, powerful word to have its purpose realized fully in us. “So shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it will NOT return unto Me void.” (Is. 55:11)
