“He ONLY is my Rock…There is a River…” (Ps. 62.2, 46.4)
Dear Ones:
What is the consistency of the Rock of which the Psalmist speaks? Is it made of sandstone, or is it granite? If we look at the Divine Rock, we see that, not only is there no weakness in its consistency, but there is the quality of being immovable, unchangeable. Jesus uses the illustration of such a rock upon which one must build their house, or life. The Rock’s resilience to the forces of nature is absolute. Neither rain, floods, nor wind can move or altar that rock. The Psalmist puts it like this: “…God IS in the midst of her; she shall not be moved. God shall help her, and that right early.” (Ps. 46:5) The true Rock is Christ Himself (1 Cor. 10:4). He does NOT move, or change. This is why nothing shall separate us from the love of Christ, and also, why He IS a very present (constant) help in trouble.
The rivers of Idaho are very beautiful. The farther North one goes, the clearer the rivers become. Their beauty is matched only by their sheer power. They, in essence, go where they will, and carry with them all that they desire. Scripture tells us that “…the streams…of this River, make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.” (Ps. 46:4) One of the primary, most demonstrable, fruits of the Spirit is JOY. In Jesus’ High Priestly prayer in John 17, He prays that his disciples “…might have HIS joy fulfilled in themselves.” (v.13) Moses would pray “…Make us glad…” (Ps. 90:15) Why? It is, as Nehemiah wrote: “… for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (8:10) This River of the Spirit, the Spirit of Christ, is beautiful and powerful. It is powerful to fill us with Christ’s joy, enabling us to overcome adversity and difficulty.
Dear Father, grant us this day, not only to plant our feet upon the Rock of Christ, but to see ourselves IN the Rock, inseparably one with Himself. May the unchanging love which filled Him, fill us in like manner. And may the powerful Joy of the Spirit fill us, that we might in earnest pursue You, and see Your kingdom come, and Your will be done in us, and in those to whom You send us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love, Dad
