“In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation, I have helped you. Behold, now is the accepted time, behold, now is the day of salvation.” 2 Corinthians 6:2
If there is one word that expresses how the disciple of Christ is to live, it is the word, “fulness.” Christ spoke specifically of the abundant Life that He came to give. Immediately after hearing these words, we should stop and ask the Lord to reveal to us what they mean. The reason for this is two-fold. First, only Christ by the Spirit can reveal the things of God to us. And secondly, only by having a clear, concise vision or perception of that which is true of us in Christ, will lay the basis for faith to lay hold upon Him for it. So, the Lord speaks of a fountain of living water within the believer. It is a fountain of Life, eternal Life which is of God by the Spirit, forever in the believer, residing in the heart. But the Lord goes on to speak of “rivers of living water” coming from the believer because of the mighty working of the Spirit. The promise of Jesus concerning the indwelling of the Spirit was given to the disciples when He said, “…He dwelleth WITH you, and will be IN you.” (Jn. 14:17)
When we go to the epistles of Paul, his letters to the believers of His day in different locations, and to specific people, he would speak of union with Christ, oneness with Him by the sovereign, unchangeable action of God. Placed into Jesus Christ, as a branch is grafted into the vine, and believer is quickened to life by the Spirit of Christ, the life-giving sap of that Heavenly Vine coursing through the life. The permanency of this blessed union is seen and based upon the resurrection of Christ when He said: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” (Jn. 11:25,26) The eternal Life of Christ, by the Spirit, not only resides in the believer, but has for its objective to FILL the believer with Himself, and this in an ever-expanding, and increasing manners, so that by the manifestation of the Spirit’s working, the believer is transformed into His image.
Then what of the matter of “the day,” TODAY? This present God-given DAY is a period of time in which the believe has the opportunity and divine calling, to abide in Christ, live by the faith of the Son of God, be filled with the Spirit and the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. It is both an invitation by the Creator and Redeemer of our souls, to commune with Him, have fellowship with Him, walking, talking, and working with Him. It is a life not only shared with us by God, but one that is communicated to us, to be manifested in us, in fullest, and the most complete manner. How is this to be?
In the book of Psalms, we find where the psalmist declares that he will seek God EARLY. From the example of Mary in the New Testament, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, we find that she had made up her mind to attend to the most important thing, and this, first. It was to sit at Jesus’ feet and hear His word. Mary understood that her highest privilege was to know God in Christ, and that she had that opportunity every morning. The Psalmist understood this too, that to seek God and to find Him in fellowship with Him, born out of true worship, was his highest privilege and obligation. Daniel would meet the Lord three times a day, surrounded by a pagan culture which defied and denounced his faith. Jesus would rise early during his ministry to be alone with His Father to commune with Him. Every day was the most important day of one’s life, for in that day one could meet God.
Dear Father, Empower us to abide. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
