My wife and I served as evangelical, protestant missionaries in France for eleven and a half years, after which I became the pastor and director of a Christian school in a French-speaking evangelical church, L'Eglise Evangelique de Saint Jerome, in Quebec, Canada. After serving in Quebec for five years, we then moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where I became the pastor of the First Evangelical Church of Greenville. In 1995, we moved to Tallahassee, Florida, where I eventually assumed the management of the family business, and remained there until 2012, when our family moved to Meridian, Idaho. My wife and I have six children. These short devotionals are born out of the loss of one of these children in particular, with the hope and prayer that they will serve to encourage and inspire those who read them in their walk with Christ. God bless you all, and may we finish well the race set before us.
“And hope makes not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given to us.” Romans 5:5 Dear Ones: Hope is a very powerful thing, because sometimes in the crucible of difficult circumstances, it seems to be the only thing that faith can cling to. …
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out.” Romans 11:33 Dear Ones: What kind of God, almighty and sovereign, everlasting, unchanging, without beginning or end, holy in every aspect of His being, give, as the greatest commandment, above…
“And there is none that calleth upon Thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of Thee.” Isaiah 64:7 Dear Ones: God is not easily known. If Jesus told His disciples that the conditions of following him were the denial of self, and the taking up of one’s cross, then there is evidently something…
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” John 14:3 Dear Ones: One of the greatest and most comforting words in Scripture is that found in John 14, where the Lord speaks of His departure…
“…for it shall be given you in that same hour what you shall speak.” Matthew 10:19 Dear Ones: We are apt to limit, or explain, the working of the Spirit of God by what we can “see” and “understand.” This is a grave error. When the Apostle John speaks of the new birth, and how…
“Wisdom cries outside; she utters her voice in the streets. She cries in the chief place of concourse.” Proverbs 1:20,21 Dear Ones: There were times in Israel’s history where she was commanded by God to shout. Such was the day that the walls of Jericho fell when Israel did so. Why the “shout?” It is…
“Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.” Psalm 37:1 Dear Ones: The life of faith is one of not only choosing that which is good and acceptable in the sight of God, but refusing to accept that which does not have its origin and essence in God. …
“I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh.” Song of Solomon 5:2 Dear Ones: On this side of heaven, God has given to us all the “limited” revelation we need to believe in Christ. It is a revelation that is adapted very precisely to our limitations, and our…
“This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.” Psalm 34:6 Dear Ones: Man is born with a “thought” in his heart that is centered upon himself. That thought tells him that he is his own creator and lord of his destiny. In some respects this is…
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various temptations (trials).” James 1:2 Dear Ones: The perspective of the Christian, or true believer in Christ, is so very different than that of the unbeliever when various “trials,” difficulties or suffering comes. In the case of Job, it seems that he had done everything…
