My wife and I served as evangelical, protestant missionaries in France for eleven and a half years, after which I became the pastor and director of a Christian school in a French-speaking evangelical church, L'Eglise Evangelique de Saint Jerome, in Quebec, Canada. After serving in Quebec for five years, we then moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where I became the pastor of the First Evangelical Church of Greenville. In 1995, we moved to Tallahassee, Florida, where I eventually assumed the management of the family business, and remained there until 2012, when our family moved to Meridian, Idaho. My wife and I have six children. These short devotionals are born out of the loss of one of these children in particular, with the hope and prayer that they will serve to encourage and inspire those who read them in their walk with Christ. God bless you all, and may we finish well the race set before us.
Dear Ones: When I was in Bible School, there came a French missionary to speak to us. She was perhaps one of the best, most fruitful and effective missionaries I have ever met. After speaking to us of God’s dealings with her, and His work in the ministry to which He had called her, the…
Dear Ones: What is it about something “new” that attracts us? A new house, a new car, a new job…a new arrival in the home, a child…what is it about “newness” that is so exciting, so attracting? Perhaps the first thing is that it has no past. It is a thing of the present moment.…
Dear Ones: In our day, as we look back over the centuries of religious history, we are apt to lose our way with regard to understanding the true, and successful approach to God. On this matter, let me begin by speaking of the matter of MERCY, for an understanding of it is paramount to coming…
Dear Ones: One of the unusual phrases in the Bible is, “…he that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” (Matt. 11:15) You would think that, generally speaking, a person who has ears does in fact, hear. But spiritually, that is not the case. One can have ears, and never hear…not that their hearing is…
Dear Ones: If ever there was a passage in Scripture which declares to us that God’s ways are not ours, it is in Matthew 16:24: “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” The first thing a person does to follow Christ is to…
Dear Ones: When I was ministering in France, we attended a Brethren church where, when one was led to pray, he would stand and pray. There was one dear brother whose name was Emile. He was a farmer, who ran the farm with his brother. Emile was a very godly man. He would, without exception…
Dear Ones: If ever there was an example of God revealing Himself, and consequently giving a vision of how much He desired, and willed, the access to a life and heart, it was when Abram was ninety-nine years old. “The Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, ‘I am the Almighty God: walk before Me,…
Dear Ones: A good many years ago I heard the story of a brother in Christ, whose name was Craig. (Not me.) He loved his wife and children greatly, but none knew the Lord. At a certain point, his wife and children came to know Christ, but Craig would have none of it. The pastor…
Dear Ones: His name was Eleazar, and he was counted to be one of David’s “mighty men.” The story is told in 2 Samuel 23, that Eleazar, apparently left alone in a battle with the Philistines, rose up, and “…smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and…
Dear Ones: When I was a boy, and lived on a farm, we built wooden sleds that we would attach to the pulling harness of a mule. The sleds were rather small, and we did not weigh much, so the mule had absolutely no trouble in pulling them. Imagine if we changed out the mule,…
